Travel Barrow Way Greenway

Cyclists can start from multiple locations on the Barrow Way Greenway. There are very many points where major and minor roads meet the greenway. There are car parking facilities at many of these points. Those travelling by car and carrying their own bikes will require parking. There is parking at the start of the greenway in Robertstown, there is ample parking in Monastrevin and Athy. At many of the bridges over the canal there is car parking available including at Rathangan and Vicarstown..

In Monasterevin and Athy there is paid parking at the train station, see here from Irish Rail. Download the APCOA app  to your phone, add your vehicle registration number to the app and select the current location. The cost per day is €3.50. Lock your car and remove any valuables when parking. There are many other parking options in the towns.

Those arriving by train or bus without bikes can hire bikes, see the Hire/ Repair page on this site.

There is ample parking along the Barrow Way at Robertstown, Rathangan, Monasterevin, Vicarstown, Athy and many minor roads on the route.

Those travelling by train will start at Monasterevin or Athy, see Irish Rail Map here and the Rail Services section of the site.

For those travelling by public transport, Monasterevin and Athy are also likely to be the preferred location as there are good rail and bus connections, see here for Irish Rail and here for Expressway bus services. Access to the greenway from the train station in Monasterevin involves a short cycle towards the town from where the greenway is easily accessible. In Athy, cycle out of the train station on to Church Road road, from there on to Leinster Street, Duke Street crossing the River Barrow and on to the The Auld Shebeen Bar from where the greenway is accessible. Mind the traffic and if kids are cycling, better to walk through the town as the streets are narrow and can be busy. From the Auld Shebeen Bar, cyclists can cycle a short distance south to where the canal meets the River Barrow at Horse Bridge and on about another kilometre where the cycle trail ends. Cyclists are more likely to head north towards Monasterevin and potentially on the full 47Kms ride to Robertstown .
